the ensemble

The SAGS Quartet is a classical saxophone quartet that has established a name for itself since its debut at the Brucknerhaus Linz in 2021.
The members, Sonja Wallnöfer, Greta Franzelin, Sonja Oberkofler and Alex Designori, bring a wide range of expertise in areas such as new music, music education and music theatre, which they have gained through their studies and performances at renowned festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Opera Forward Festival and others. Their repertoire includes original works and arrangements of classical and contemporary music.
In addition to their concert activities, they are also involved in music education by visiting schools and taking part in productions for children.

Since their debut concert at the Brucknerhaus in Linz in 2021, the ensemble has made a name for itself as a classical saxophone quartet. Not least due to the versatile concert activities of the musicians, the ensemble is characterised by its interdisciplinary skills. The individual saxophonists specialise in various fields such as new music, music education and music theatre, which they have acquired both in subject-specific studies and, for example, as active musicians at the Opera Forward Festival at the National Opera in Amsterdam and in music theatre at the Salzburg Festival. This strongly fertilises and influences their musical work in the ensemble.

The SAGS Quartet has already performed in various concert halls and festivals, including the Alpen Classica Festival, as part of the Kulturverein Musik & Kirche Brixen, in the Lanserhaus in Eppan, in the theatre hall of the Kulturhaus Schlanders and several times in the Brucknerhaus Linz.

The repertoire of the ensemble includes original works and arrangements of classical and contemporary music, reflecting the broad spectrum of tonal facets of the saxophone. Their creativity and constant curiosity for other art forms helps the quartet to create interdisciplinary collaborations and performances. In this way, the SAGS Quartet gains a solid foundation in the world of musical theatre, but also explores the fusion of literature and music. This joy of experimentation is uniquely reflected in their concert programmes.

The ensemble, consisting of Sonja Wallnöfer on soprano saxophone, Greta Franzelin on alto saxophone, Sonja Oberkofler on baritone saxophone and Alex Designori on tenor saxophone, came together through their shared South Tyrolean origins and energetic passion for chamber music.
They completed their musical training in various places across Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

The four saxophonists have not only made a name for themselves as musicians giving concerts, but also as teachers. With their music education programme, they visit schools with the aim of introducing young audiences to the world of classical saxophone. The ensemble was also part of a music theatre production for children as part of Mini – Music at the Brucknerhaus in Linz.
